Jerusalem has not only been central to the spiritual life of the Jewish people, referred to over 600 times in the Torah, (first five books of the Bible), Jerusalem is the physical location of the Jewish capital since the time of King David, over 3,000 years ago. The City of Zion is therefore not only of great Biblical significance, but of tremendous historic importance as well. From time immemorial and the great Jewish Patriarchs such as Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, (whose name was changed to Israel), has a Jewish presence remained in the Holy City, the City of God – Jerusalem.
When the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BCE, they also partially destroyed the Temple. Those Jews who survived the massacre were sent into temporary exile, pledging that they would never forget their beloved Jerusalem or its Temple.
Indeed, King David wrote in the Book of Psalms: “By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, and we wept, when we remembered Zion. How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land? If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand wither. Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I remember thee not; if I set not Jerusalem above my chiefest joy” [Psalms 137:1-6].
While there has been 4,000 years of a Jewish presence in Israel and its capital Jerusalem, there were those who were scattered and exiled. To them, Jerusalem represents the very heart and soul of the Jewish people who have dreamed of returning to and rebuilding it – a longing reflected in the concluding words of Israel’s national anthem, Ha Tikvah or The Hope.
President Trump stated in his introductory remarks on 05.14.2018, on the opening of the United States Embassy in Jerusalem: “This city and its entire nation is a testament to the unbreakable spirit of the Jewish people. The United States will always be a great friend of Israel and a partner in the cause of freedom and peace.” [See: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/06/world/middleeast/trump-israel-speech-transcript.html]
And hear too how the Islamic Resistance Movement, HAMAS, continues to war against the state of Israel, in addition to savaging their own, Muslim Arab “Palestinians.” Hamas continues to make payments to those who will commit acts of terror along the Gaza-Israel border – encouraging the Arabs to do everything possible to destroy the only liberal democracy in the region, Israel, and in so doing, put their own lives at risk.
